8.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRUCK CHILE




A tsunami warning has been issued for New Zealand and much of the Pacific following a massive earthqauke in Chile on Saturday evening.At least 78 people are dead following the 8.8 magnitude quake . The first wave to arrive in New Zealand will be in the areas around Chatham Islands at approximately 7.05am. Strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours . The President made this statement from an emergency response center, established in the capital of the country. Chile’s only second largest city known as Concepcion has been reported only 75 miles from the epicenter of Saturday’s terrifying earthquake.
"The tsunami has generated may cause damage along the shoreline in Hawaii," said Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. "Urgent action must be done to protect life and property," added Warning Center in Hawaii.

SYDNEY: A huge arc of Pacific nations from New Zealand to Japan went on tsunami alert on Saturday after the giant earthquake in Chile, readying emergency plans instituted after the Indian Ocean disaster of 2004.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned dozens of far-flung islands and atolls of possible "widespread damage" from waves generated by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile, which killed at least 78 people.
The massive quake plunged much of the Chilean capital, Santiago, into darkness as it snapped power lines and severed communications. The international airport was closed after being damaged

Following an earthquake in Chile a tsunami warning for Hawaii has also been issued by the Tsunami Pacific Warning Center. Updates on Chile reveal that at least 6 people lost their lives on Friday when the coastal areas were struck by magnitude 8.8 powerful earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned dozens of countries and remote island nations from Hawaii to Japan of possible "widespread damage" from waves, generated by the massive quake which may reach three meters (nine feet).

"Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami has been generated which could cause widespread damage," the Hawaii-based center said. "Authorities should take appropriate action in response to this threat."
